LEITH CHURCHES FORUM

The Forum’s Annual Conference held on a Saturday morning in October at North Leith Church was agreed by everyone to have been a great success. With Joint Kirk Session meetings now in the driving seat of decision-making, this year’s Conference was less about coming up with new proposals, and more about sharing in the exciting journey we are on together.
As well as time for discussion, we had a brief presentation from Susan Reid, the consultant employed by the Church of Scotland to work with the Minister’s Team. Most of her theme was devoted to looking at the issues that change brings with it, and she based some of her talk on the story of Moses and the Exodus – a time of significant change for the people of Israel – symbolised perhaps by the parting of the Red Sea. Once across that and the waters come back together again, there was ‘no way back’. But indeed many of the people did look back, and see the previous times – a time of ‘slavery’ – as preferable to what they were now experiencing.
Susan quoted the French Poet, Paul Valery, who once said, “Every beginning ends something.” Susan’s talk helped to clarify for all of us gathered together, that if we are actually to do new things, we have to make space for them – and that can only be done by letting go of something we are currently doing. Quite a challenge for us all.
