Climate Change Bil
Posted Jul 4, 02:01 PM
The Climate Change Bill completed its third stage debate in the Scottish Parliament last Wednesday which means it now goes for royal assent and to become law.
Almost the last amendment to be put forward was that on public engagement from Brian Adam MSP. This requires the Scottish Government to publish a strategy for public engagement before the end of 2010. With the support of all parties this amendment was accepted without a vote.
It is clear from the record that much of the inspiration for the amendment and its force comes from the work and lobbying of Eco-Congregations across Scotland. Thank you all very much for your help and support!
In developing and putting into effect the engagement strategy there will be an even more important role for Eco-Congregations. For example, the Bill sets very demanding targets from carbon reduction in Scotland: 42% by 2020. Few other countries have set the target so high and effective public involvement these targets are unlikely to be met. Congregations could play a leading role in helping communities reach these targets.
We are very grateful for your on-going work and support and look much forward to continuing this process of working with you in Eco-congregation Scotland!
Best wishes,
